HDMI ARC, eARC and soundbar wiring, explained

ARC and eARC are the two audio return channels built into HDMI.

ARC and eARC are the two audio return channels built into HDMI. ARC sends compressed surround sound from the TV to a soundbar or receiver over the same cable that carries video, and eARC does the same job with higher bandwidth for uncompressed formats. If your TV and soundbar both list eARC, use that port on both ends; if only ARC is available, a standard High Speed HDMI cable is enough.

The practical rule is simple: the audio path is only as good as its weakest link. A 2010-era TV with HDMI 1.4, a 2018 soundbar with eARC and a random cable from a drawer will negotiate down to the oldest common standard. Buyers who compare labels and ports before they buy, the way the Italian guide Passi di Sorrento walks through HDMI and TV sound, usually avoid a second trip to the store.

What is the difference between ARC and eARC?

ARC, short for Audio Return Channel, was added with HDMI 1.4 in 2009. It carries audio from the TV's tuner or apps back down the cable to an amplifier or soundbar, so you do not need a separate optical cable. Its bandwidth is limited, roughly 1 Mbps in practice, which is enough for compressed Dolby Digital and DTS streams but not for the lossless versions.

eARC, introduced with HDMI 2.1, raises that return path to about 37 Mbps. That is enough for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and multichannel PCM. It also adds automatic lip-sync correction and a handshake that lets the TV detect what the soundbar can decode.

Both use the same physical connector. The difference is in the silicon behind it. A TV with eARC will still work with an ARC-only soundbar, but it will fall back to compressed audio. Check the labels printed next to the ports: manufacturers usually mark only one or two of them as ARC or eARC.

HDMI 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2: what actually changes

The version number describes the capabilities of the port, not the picture quality you will see. HDMI 2.0 supports 4K at 60 Hz and 18 Gbps of total bandwidth. HDMI 2.1 raises that to 48 Gbps and adds 4K at 120 Hz, 8K at 60 Hz, variable refresh rate and enhanced ARC. HDMI 2.2, announced in early 2025, pushes the ceiling to 96 Gbps and is aimed at higher resolutions and refresh rates still in the pipeline.

For sound, the version matters less than the eARC flag. A TV can have HDMI 2.0 ports and still support eARC, because eARC was specified as an optional feature that manufacturers backported. What you should look for on the spec sheet is the word eARC, not the number.

One caveat: HDMI 2.2 devices are rare. If you are buying a soundbar today, HDMI 2.1 with eARC is the realistic target. Buying for 2.2 means paying for headroom you cannot use yet.

Which HDMI cable category do you need?

Cables are certified by bandwidth, not by version number. The categories you will see on packaging are:

  • Standard HDMI: up to 1080i, fine for old equipment, not for 4K.
  • High Speed HDMI: 10.2 Gbps, handles 4K at 30 Hz and ARC.
  • Premium High Speed HDMI: 18 Gbps, tested for 4K at 60 Hz with HDR.
  • Ultra High Speed HDMI: 48 Gbps, required for 4K at 120 Hz, 8K and eARC with lossless audio.

For a soundbar on an eARC port, an Ultra High Speed cable with the certification label is the safe choice. It costs a few dollars more and removes one variable. For a plain ARC connection, a High Speed cable is sufficient. Length matters too: passive copper cables above 5 meters can struggle with 48 Gbps, and that is where active or optical HDMI cables come in.

Avoid the trap of buying a cable marketed by version number alone. "HDMI 2.1 cable" is not an official category. The official mark is the certification program run by the HDMI Licensing Administrator, and it is printed on the package.

How do you connect a soundbar step by step?

1. Identify the eARC or ARC port on the TV. It is usually labeled on the back panel and listed in the manual. 2. Identify the HDMI OUT port on the soundbar, marked ARC or eARC. Do not use a regular HDMI input. 3. Connect the two with a certified cable. Power both devices off first, then on, so the handshake runs cleanly. 4. In the TV menu, enable CEC. Sony calls it Bravia Sync, LG calls it SimpLink, Samsung calls it Anynet+. This lets the TV remote control the soundbar volume. 5. Set the TV audio output to HDMI ARC or eARC, not to the internal speakers. 6. In the soundbar app or menu, select the HDMI input rather than Bluetooth or optical.

If there is no sound, the usual culprits are a cable in the wrong port, CEC disabled, or an old cable that cannot carry the return channel. Swapping the cable is the fastest test.

Does eARC matter if you only watch streaming apps?

For most streaming services, no. Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video deliver compressed Dolby Digital Plus, which ARC handles without trouble. eARC becomes useful when you play Blu-ray discs, use a game console that outputs lossless audio, or want multichannel PCM from a PC.

That said, eARC also improves lip-sync and device detection, which helps even with compressed streams. If you are buying a TV and a soundbar in the same purchase, matching eARC on both ends costs little and avoids a future upgrade.

What about optical cables and older setups?

Optical S/PDIF is still found on many TVs and soundbars. It carries the same compressed formats as ARC but cannot carry eARC, cannot pass CEC commands, and needs a separate cable. It remains a useful fallback when the HDMI ports are occupied or when the TV is old enough to predate ARC.

A common setup is a game console into the TV, the TV into the soundbar over eARC, and everything controlled by one remote. That works because the TV passes the console audio back down the return channel. If the console is plugged directly into the soundbar instead, the soundbar must pass video through to the TV, which adds a hop and sometimes a compatibility problem.

The general principle for any living-room audio chain is the same one that applies to speakers and turntables: match the weakest component to the job. A premium cable on an ARC-only port will not unlock lossless sound, and a lossless source through an optical cable will arrive compressed. Check the ports, check the labels, and buy the cable that matches the bandwidth you actually need.
